"presas" - 1976-1978 Pilar Aymerich
Second Edition, 2023
Softcover
52 pages, 160 x 213 mm
Texts in Spanish and Catalan
The first feminist demonstration in Barcelona after Franco's regime took place in front of the Women's Prison of La Trinidad in March 1976. The demands included replacing the "Evangelical Crusader Sisters of Christ the King" with state-employed prison officers, improving the living conditions of the inmates, and granting amnesty for crimes that discriminated against women, such as adultery, abortion, or abandonment of family.
In 1978, the nuns abruptly left the prison. While new female officers arrived from different parts of the country, the inmates had to take charge of the prison's infrastructure. During this unexpected exercise in community self-management, photographer Pilar Aymerich managed to enter and document this historic moment.
Presas collects this previously unpublished report in its entirety, alongside the written testimony by Pilar Aymerich herself, a key figure in the feminist and cultural awakening of the late Francoist period and the Transition, and winner of the 2021 National Photography Award.
