In this second edition of Concrete Series, we delve into the world of music, broadening perspectives and exploring the stories of multidisciplinary creators based in Barcelona.
We present Catalina Cornejo, aka Catana aka Mailen Princess. With a sweet gaze and overflowing eloquence, Catalina tells us a story of resilience, authenticity, and music.
1.- Briefly describe yourself and your music.
I am Catalina Cornejo, a Chilean artist who has been living in Barcelona for a year and a half. As a singer, I am known as Catana, and as a DJ, I go by the name Mailen Princess. I am a passionate creative who enjoys both creating and consuming art, especially music. I take pride in being a pioneer of experimental rap in Chile, and my work always seeks to connect with people through a unique and authentic perspective.
2.- How has your experience of transitioning and adapting as a migrant and artist in Barcelona been?
My experience in Barcelona has been deeply enriching but also full of challenges. Being far from my home and family, who have always been my foundation, has profoundly shaken me. At first, facing the reality of being undocumented and feeling "illegal" in an unfamiliar place was extremely difficult. Without a support network and unable to fully dedicate myself to what I truly love, I encountered a loneliness and vulnerability I had never experienced before.
Additionally, transitioning from someone with a significant role in my country to becoming an unknown figure was a blow to my ego, something that unsettled me on more than one occasion. However, this experience, though painful, allowed me to rebuild myself from scratch, rediscover who I am, and work on my humility and perseverance. It has been a double-edged sword: it challenged me, but it also gave me the opportunity to grow immensely as a person, as a woman, and as an artist.
Today, I deeply value what I have learned through this process because it has made me stronger, more self-aware, and more grateful for who I am and what I can create.
3.- As a singer and DJ, what is the main message you seek to convey?
As a singer and DJ, my main goal is to project what truly comes from my heart, soul, and mind. I strive to stay true to myself and my feelings, setting aside external expectations, though I admit it’s not always easy in today’s world. My message has always been about authenticity: being yourself, going with the flow of life, living every moment, allowing yourself to feel, be moved, cry, laugh, be strong, and also be vulnerable.
Musically, I’ve always been honest with what I express, and this is reflected in both my singing and my work as a DJ. I love making people dance, but not necessarily to the music of the moment or the latest trends. I prefer to convey real emotions, connecting with what I’m experiencing in the present. For me, music is a language that transcends trends and allows for the creation of unique and authentic moments.
